Dominic Walsh: Steps to Success
Classically trained, but aniconoclast at heart, Dominic Walsh joined theranks of the Houston Ballet when it was just start-ing to explore contemporary dance. In the 1980s,the fifth-largest American company sashayed effortlessly between Swan Lake and experimental works.“They were not just asking us to dance, but also to speak, sing, act.” And that’s how Walsh turned his talents as principal dancer to choreography. In 2002 he founded his own company. “The audience in Houston is fantastic because it’s a business city, a place of international exchangeand a hub for artistic projects.” He now works with opera singers, flmmakers and visual artists, inventing worlds similar to Japanese butoh, without ever losing sight of his dancing career.
